Sunday 26 June is the international ceramics fair Maaseik 2022. More than 100 ceramists in the center of Maaseik. A historic city in Belgian Limburg on the river Maas.
I am ready to show my latest work to ceramics lovers. They always visit this fair in large numbers. I will surprise them with new work, unique glazes and refreshing hand-thrown ceramics.

I have already set my tomtom to Maaseik. Also enjoy contemporary ceramics. Come by and say hello to me at stall 49!

New ceramic work
The sales at the Dwingeloo ceramics fair a few weeks ago, has reduced my stock. So for this fair I had to go back to work. There is nothing more fun than trying out new shapes and glazes. And I do find a bit of deadline stress stimulating.

New glazes and glaze combinations provide nice surprises. I never really have enough time to try out everything I have in my head. But I’m trying.
Clay kneading, weighing, throwing, turning, finishing, biscuit firing, glazing and finally the last firing at 1280 oC (stoneware temperature) and the work is done.

Although, after that comes the most exciting part: opening the kiln. Fortunately, (most) work came out fine. So I can fill the market stall in Maaseik with new work that I am proud of.
Contemporary handmade ceramics
And that’s what contemporary (thrown) ceramics are all about. A unique product that has been worked on with care and love. Traditional, innovative and surprisingly unique.
I am again very curious what the visitors of the ceramics fair will think of it “live”.

And there have been more and more in recent years. The renewed interest in “handmade” gives me (and many with me) great pleasure.
Not that I think handmade ceramics will ever disappear, but there have been times when it was less popular. Ceramics fairs such as in Maaseik therefore always remain important to support the craft in good and bad times.
So thank you municipality Maaseik (and all other organizers elsewhere) for organizing!
