Men's tears between ceramics

Men’s tears among handmade ceramics

Maybe I’ve become more sensitive, but I think I see lots of men’s tears nowadays. It’s not because I watch reality shows. Big Brother, the Voice, Hell’s Kitchen, tears provoked for the ratings I ignore. I will also have nothing to do with tears for emotional blackmail.

No, I mean real tears, like president Obama’s , but then in the ceramics scene. Keith Brymer Jones in his judging at The Great Pottery Throw Down comes to mind. But there are more ceramists who have become immersed in modernizing male emotions.

Will the twenties be the emotional catch-up for modern male ceramists?

The Great Pottery Throw Down

Right away in the new season of The Great Pottery Throw Down. Keith can’t keep his eyes dry if he sees the end result of one of the contestants. He makes emotions visible of every maker who has worked with heart and soul.  The result always evokes emotions. Sometimes tears of happiness and sometimes…

These emotional reactions are nothing new. New is that more and more men (publicly) are no longer feel inhibited by social conventions. This modernization of the emotional side of men has now also reached the mass media.

What is this salty discharge coming from my eyes?  (Seinfeld)

Men's tears in enamelIt was hilarious at the end of the last century when Seinfeld shed a tear in the episode when he noticed a mental change after ending a relationship. Nowadays, the male tears are flowing in abundance and nobody is really surprised anymore.

According to the English, artist, ceramist, author and transvestite Grayson Perry the emotional image of men is in urgent need of renovation. The”Department of Masculinity” as he calls it, is outdated. The modern man suffers more than benefits from this historic ballast.

In his book “the descent of man” from 2017, he argues for more emotional rights for men. It seems that this right is now being claimed in the 2020s, at least on TV…

Men’s tears

Those who make ceramics have seen heartbreaking scenes when opening the kiln. My soul has been hardened with a thick layer of unbreakable glaze.

Men's tears broken ceramicsI do not leave men’s tears at the sight of exploded ceramics.  Ceramic stuck to the kiln plate through dripping glazes, a Vulcan shows more emotions than I do. I still have a long way to go.

Okay, “full disclosure”, I do like to watch the The Great Pottery Throw Down and The Big Painting Challenge. I’m not entirely immune to some reality shows on TV.

Perhaps I come into contact with my emotions more than I think.
