I hear you thinking, “A tufted duck for Christmas diner?” No, these ducks are already roasted. I do not propose another Christmas banquet, I would like to introduce you to my latest ceramic sculptures, which would like to visit for the holidays.
And what an “Etsy” is? Let me start at the beginning. As I write this blog my kiln is cooling from a bisque fire. In the barn, my kiln space, it’s nice and warm, but outside it’s chilly. Days are getting shorter and I keep getting more emails about making my Etsy store winter ready for the holiday season.
And I have started. I filled my shop with new sculptures. And I’ve made my first discount campaign at Etsy…
Etsy, marketplace for creatives
Etsy is a digital market place. Like eBay, it’s a place where people can buy items safely on internet. However, the difference is that at eBay everything is sold, at Etsy only handmade or vintage products of at least 20 years old.
A few years ago I opened my Etsy shop. But this platform has, like a “real” ceramics fair, also a steep learning curve. Now, when days become shorter and ceramics fairs wait for warmer days, I am again diving in this market place.
Tufted duck ceramics
But what about the tufted duck? As you may already know, I usually make ceramic shapes that refer to herons, owls or owl chicks. But a few months ago a new bird flew from my turntable. And not just any feathered friend, a duck or rather a tufted duck.
I have nothing against ordinary ducks (Donald Duck is one of my oldest friends) but tufted ducks are the nicest ducks that exist. A little smaller, a little shy and dare I say; they are just cuter than other ducks.
But all this is not the reason why I have named some of my latest ceramics sculptures “tufted duck”. In fact, I make only stylized bird figures, which only refer to the “real deal”. I am always looking for beautiful ceramic shapes where a rich glaze can come to its own right. A tufted duck has such a shape.

Only when shape, finish and heating are in harmony, I share the end result. In other words, if I am happy with the results of the kiln, then they may enter into the world.
But they need a title first, because only with a proper name the sculptures are complete. And for these shapes I find the name “tufted duck” applicable, don’t you think?
